Hot tub before removal — Charlottesville VA · Charlottesville, VA · Albemarle Moving
Hot Tubs Don't Age Gracefully
We remove dozens of hot tubs from Charlottesville and Albemarle County properties every year. The most common reason for removal: the spa was installed in the 1990s or early 2000s, ran well for a decade, and has spent the last five to ten years being covered but unused, with progressively more expensive repair needs that finally crossed the line from "worth fixing" to "just get rid of it." The second most common reason: a new Charlottesville homeowner bought a house with a hot tub they did not want and cannot afford to maintain.

The Step-by-Step Hot Tub Removal Process
Step 1: Draining
Before any disassembly, the hot tub needs to be drained. If the spa is functional, you can drain it yourself in the 24 hours before we arrive — this saves time and keeps the job cost at the lower end of the range. If the spa is non-functional or you cannot drain it yourself, our crew handles the drain on arrival using a submersible pump. Drain time for a standard residential spa: 45 to 90 minutes.
Important: Charlottesville area building codes allow hot tub water to drain to the sanitary sewer (not stormwater drainage). Run the drain hose to a floor drain or utility sink, not to the street gutter.
Step 2: Electrical Disconnection
Hot tubs are hardwired to a GFCI-protected 240-volt circuit. This connection must be properly disconnected before removal. If you have an electrician relationship, have them disconnect before we arrive. Otherwise, our crew disconnects at the panel (breaker off, wires capped) — this is safe and standard. Note: if you plan to install a new hot tub in the same location, have the electrician leave the circuit accessible rather than removing it.
Step 3: Access Assessment
This is the step that surprises most Charlottesville homeowners. Hot tubs are large and heavy — a standard 7x7 spa weighs 800–1,000 pounds empty. They were typically installed when access was different — before a fence was built, before a deck was added, before landscaping grew in. Getting it out requires either disassembly (cutting the spa into sections using reciprocating saws) or a wide enough path to move it whole.
We assess access before beginning. A 36-inch gate clearance can work for smaller spas with careful maneuvering; anything tighter requires sectioning. We do not make access situations that are not there — if the spa cannot come out whole through an existing opening, we section it on-site.
Step 4: Disassembly and Removal
Shell removed, jets and plumbing components stripped, insulation pulled, frame disassembled. The major components: fiberglass or acrylic shell (disposed of), foam insulation (disposed of), metal frame (recycled), motor and pump assembly (evaluated for donation/recycling), electrical components (recycled). All debris is loaded and hauled completely — nothing is left staged in your yard or driveway.
What Happens to Old Hot Tubs
Hot tubs have limited donation value in Charlottesville — functional units in good condition occasionally go to families who request them through our community network, but non-functional and aged spas go to disposal. The metal components (frame, pump housing, plumbing fittings) are recycled at Charlottesville-area scrap metal facilities. The fiberglass or acrylic shell goes to the transfer station.
Same-Day Hot Tub Removal in Charlottesville
Same-day hot tub removal is available in Charlottesville and Albemarle County most days when you call before 10am. We can assess your specific situation over the phone — describe the spa size, approximate age, and access situation — and give you an accurate price in two to three minutes. If your hot tub is functional, drain it the night before our crew arrives. A fully drained spa speeds up the removal by 45–90 minutes and can keep the job at the lower end of the price range. Instructions: turn off the power at the breaker, connect a garden hose to the drain spigot (or use a submersible pump), and run to a sanitary sewer connection. Call 434-230-4551 if you need guidance on draining your specific unit.
